The Brill Building

THE BRILL BUILDING

The Brill Building, located at 1619 Broadway in Times Square, is renowned for its reputation as a songwriter's mecca. Completed in 1931, the owners rented space to music publishers and just thirty years later the building housed over 160 music businesses. Famous clientele include Cole Porter, Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Jay-Z, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Li'l Wayne, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Burt Bacharach, Justin Bieber, Irving Berlin, Neil Diamond, Carly Simon, Beyonce, and Carole King.

The vertical integration of the building allowed songwriters to see their work through entirely, and all within the confines of The Brill. It wasn't uncommon to see a songwriter finish a song, have it arranged by musicians renting down the hall, go downstairs to get it copied at the duplication office, go upstairs to have it sung and played over in the studio, get it cut onto a record, and finally bring the finished product to one of the building's publishers, who would then approach managers and radio promoters.

Countless hits have been penned in The Brill, among them are "Be My Baby," "Chapel of Love," and "Spanish Harlem," The landmark 11-story tower even has its own genre called "The Brill Building Sound." Rightly so, the music churned out by Brill Building songwriters has topped the Top 40 charts for decades. These artists continue to add to the ever-expanding archive of hits, with recent additions such as Jay-Z and Alicia Keyes' "Empire State of Mind," T.I.'s Paper Trail, and Whitney Houston's I Look To You. The Brill Building is an American icon and the symbol of generations of songwriters that continues to evolve and produce the biggest hits of today.
